“her new blog was actually a project she’s been sitting on for almost a year”
Baby I’m back!….Again!
Happy New Year and all that good stuff as we continue to ring in 2019 (it’s not officially over til January 7th anyway so just bear with us Southern folks/traditionalists). Happy Capricorn New Moon. Happy 2019. I hope it was filled with love, fun, food, and lots of collard greens and maybe even black eyed peas.
I honestly haven’t forgotten about this blog. In fact, it’s haunted me in a lot of ways. What was intended to be a project I took on as I searched for employment and moved to New York stopped functioning well when I… actually found a job and actually moved to New York. Funny how that happens. In what feels like a lifetime ago and a whirlwind of a summer, I dropped out of graduate school at UCLA, moved to New York City, spent a month in Paris, started a job as a middle school teacher, and slowly acclimated myself to the life of a moderately functional adult with a decent job, decent pay, and high af rent.
I had a birthday (XXVI!!), traveled a bit, and even did a crunch or two at the gym. All in all, I got into the swing of things.
But this blog, or rather media in general, kept calling me.
Reflecting on the new year and the commitments (NOT resolutions!) I want to make, I realize that now is as good as it’s going to get to create….something. Regardless of fear or perfectionism and before everything ends, now is the time to create…anything. And despite what the worst of the world wants to say, why not us? Why not me? In the past year, I’ve come to know very closely that so much of what I experience as identity is also experienced through media; written, visual, sonic, and beyond. And so much of what I experience as media is felt through my identity, enmeshing with how I define myself. My politics, my self, our world deserve and belong in a reality that is reflective of their beauty; one that I can create.
So I’m back here. On this “new” platform. I hope you’ll have me.
